Model Retailer is a controlled-circulation trade magazine sent to qualified hobby shop owners and managers. You can't buy it in any store, though we do offer
subscriptions.
We cover business issues as well as a range of hobby fields: model railroading; games and gaming miniatures; radio-control cars, planes and boats; model kits and die-cast models; as well as specialty items such as rockets, kites, slot cars, dollhouse miniatures, tools and accessories, and books and videos related to all these pastimes. The magazine also reports on merchandising, marketing, sales and technology.
We publish 12 regular issues, a show guide for the iHobby Expo in Chicago in October, and our online
Hobby Industry Directory.
The magazine, established in 1975, is produced by
Kalmbach Publishing Co. Kalmbach also publishes 15 consumer magazines (including
Model Railroader,
FineScale Modeler,
Classic Toy Trains, and
Scale Auto), several lines of books, and distributes 60 hobby-related magazines published by other companies.

Jeff Reich Jeff Reich is a veteran of the publishing business, starting as a copy editor more than 20 years ago in Mexico City at the Mexico Journal, an English-language newsweekly. He's held positions at other magazines and newspapers, and for the past 12 years was editor and managing editor of The Writer, a former Kalmbach Publishing Co. title. While there, the magazine garnered nine awards for editorial excellence from Folio magazine. Reich also has a background in retail. Nick Bullock, Assistant Editor
Nick Bullock works with distributors and manufacturers in the radio control, die-cast, slot car, and books and video segments. He also organizes product reviews for each of those product segments, reports on industry news, writes features, and maintains the magazine’s online content and social media. Before coming to Model Retailer, Nick was an editor at a weekly newspaper in Illinios.
