What do I use to make nice signs?

Recently, a retailer complimented Melanie McIntosh on her March 2009 article about effective use of signs in stores, Signage is the key, but wondered what kind of software could be used to create eye-catching signs.
There are a number of high-end illustration suites (such as Adobe Illustrator) that could be used, but most of them are going to be far too expensive and complicated for the limited purposes that the majority of retailers will use them for.
Rich Kizer and Georganne Bender recommend retailers contact Insignia Systems. Insignia offers PC-based software called Stylus that is specifically designed for designing signs. Insignia also sells a complete sign-making system and sign supplies.
Hope this helps!
