Hobby retail sales see small rise

Hobby stores’ sales — along with those of sporting goods, books and music stores — saw a seasonally adjusted, month-to-month increase of .6 percent in May and an unadjusted, year-over-year increase of 1.8 percent, according to a press release from the National Retail Federation.

Retail sales as a whole, excluding automobiles, gas stations and restaurants, increased .6 percent from April and 4.8 percent from last year, according to the NRF report.

“In spite on fluctuating gas prices, severe weather in much of the country and fiscal policy uncertainty, consumers continue to demonstrate an inherent resiliency and flexibility,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “We should never underestimate the role and strength of the American shopper or the retailers that serve them.”
