Round 2 acquires rights to historic model kit brands
December 7, 2011
Round 2 LLC has announced the acquisition of all rights to model kit brands AMT, MPC and Polar Lights from TOMY International Inc., formerly RC2 Corporation.
Round 2 has been producing kits under the brand names through a licensing agreement since 2008.
Thomas Lowe, president of Round 2 LLC, said, “We’ve had a great relationship with TOMY International for a long time, and it has been a pleasure working with them as a licensee and now as a buyer. We feel extremely fortunate to be acquiring these brands.”
Lowe added the acquisition of the well-known hobby brands “represents a significant strategic fit with our initiatives and where we believe the industry is headed, in the near and long term.”
Pete Henseler, president of TOMY International, said “We wish them [Round 2] continued success in the model kit business and expect their expertise and passion … to drive these brands in the years ahead.”
AMT was founded in 1948 as Aluminum Model Toys, a promotional product company. Model Products Corporation (MPC) was started in 1963 as a model car manufacturer. The newest component, Polar Lights, started in 1996 and is focused on figure, horror and pop-culture genres.
Some of the tooling acquired in the deal dates back to between the time AMT and MPC were founded. It will allow Round 2 to bring back classic model kits in original-styled packaging.
“I grew up building models. Not in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined I’d someday own the brands I was building as a kid,” Lowe said.
