Railroading reality check

A reflection on the state of the model railroading retail industry and what store owners can do to ensure its survival

For years, people have been saying the model train hobby is dying. “Model railroaders are mostly older fellows who are selling off their stuff, downsizing or passing away,” they say. “And young kids aren’t interested. They only want to play with their iPods, not trains. Just look at the number of hobby stores closing.”

As a train store owner for some 20 years, I can tell you the hobby is not dying — in fact, far from it.
