The economy is looking brighter, but will that translate to a better retail year? Several experts explore the trends and look ahead

"Steady as she goes.” That old nautical phrase, urging a firm hand on the wheel and an unwavering eye on the compass, seems especially apt for today’s retailers.

The economic waters remained troubled in 2013. Low business activity and consumer confidence led to a subpar sales environment. This year, however, an improved economic forecast should guide retailers to greater profits.
