Telluride 4x4 from Traxxas
November 13, 2013
|Product: The Traxxas Telluride 4x4 comes with everything needed to start driving R/C trucks, including a pre-painted body, 7-cell NiMH battery with Traxxas high-current connector, charger, and 2.4-GHz transmitter. It also provides three sizes of Allen wrenches, extra body clips, shock pis-tons, pre-load spacers and body washers. A watertight ESC and speed controller allow R/C enthusiasts to power through terrain off limits to other vehicles.|
Performance: Known for crazy speed and extreme durability, the Telluride departs from half of this equation. Based on the modular design of the Slash, the Telluride’s tub chassis and construction remain rock solid. The long suspension arms and high stance provide both greater stability and a wider range of motion for traversing difficult terrain that would stymie other trucks.
Not your typical R/C truck, the Telluride is something of a mix between monster truck and rock crawler. Not nearly as fast as other Traxxas offerings, the torquey 550T motor gobbled up nearly all of the terrain I could find, from tall grass to muddy, rock-strewn trails. One word of warning: The electronics are not waterproof. I wouldn’t recommend running it through a deep stream or diving it into a swimming pool. However, it’s more than capable of defeating puddles and tearing it up in the rain.
I was able to get 15 minutes of hard running out of the included 8.4-volt NiMH. The Kumo replica tires and faux-beadlock wheels look great and are very responsive.
Even though I had fun bashing with the Telluride, there are a couple of drawbacks. First, it doesn’t come with the four AA batteries required for the transmitter. Second, the charger requires a full eight hours to charge the battery pack. And while that wouldn’t be big deal for someone who already has a charger with a Traxxas compatible plug, it’s an enormous buzz kill for first-timers.
Marketing: The Telluride, as far as I can tell, is designed for beginners. Compared to the price point of other vehicles in Traxxas’ lineup, the Telluride makes perfect sense for the novice R/C hobbyist: It’s tough, easy to set up and extremely manageable.
The Telluride gives newbies the chance to experience a wide range of R/C driving fun without the fear of having a truck or buggy that is too fast for them. Chances are it will survive just about anything normal use can throw at it, which makes it ideal for younger drivers, who are prone to running into obstacles rather than avoiding them.
A separate charger is a must for this rig, and probably a second battery, because no one wants to wait eight hours between runs. As always, a LiPo battery can greatly improve the Telluride’s speed, but it isn’t necessary and might actually detract from the experience.
