Small Business Saturday to be even bigger

American Express is planning for an even bigger Small Business Saturday this year thanks to promotions for both merchants and customers.

Founded by the credit card company in 2009, the annual shopping event scheduled for the Saturday after Thanksgiving is designed to keep people shopping local. Over 95 million cardholders took part in 2015, according to Amex.

This year, the company hopes to surpass that number by allowing card members to earn the same 2X rewards on purchases they make at qualifying small businesses from now until Dec. 31, an offer normally reserved for that one day only.

To help merchants, American Express is offering marketing promotions such as digital banners, email templates, posts for social media and free online ads to store to take the card.
