Published: May 11, 2016

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) San Diego Section has awarded AMA member Dr. Gary B. Fogel the Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award for the San Diego Section. The award recognizes Vogel's volunteer activity for the past 30 years. Focusing on the history of aeromodeling and aviation, his primary goal was helping the public understand the contributions California, and specifically San Diego, has made to the world of aerospace.

Fogel is the author of The Torrey Pines Gliderport and the co-author of Quest for Flight: John J. Montgomery and the Dawn of Aviation in the West. He also works at San Diego State University teaching incoming freshmen Introduction to Aerospace Engineering. Fogel is an AMA Leader Member and an AMA Fellow who held the National Aeronautic Association record for F3 R/C glider class 158 Distance to Goal and Return at a distance of 24.29 miles from 2005 to 2012.

Fogel's contributions were recognized at the AIAA's Annual Awards Banquet at San Diego State University on April 25, 2016.
