Hobbytyme acquires Mason Distributing

Longtime hobby distributor Mason Distributing was recently sold to Connecticut-based Hobbytyme Wholesale Distributors Inc.

The sale was consummated in late January, said Henry Mason, Mason Distributing’s former owner.

Mason will work as a sales representative out of Mason Distributing’s old Roanoke, Va., office, he said, but the rest of the operation has shifted entirely to Hobbytyme’s East Hartford, Conn., location.

Mason said the sale was not entirely for financial reasons; he has had some recent health issues, he said, and is looking forward to scaling back his workload. “I wanted to play some golf,” he added.

Although Mason said he and Hobbytyme’s Joe St. John had previously discussed a sale, talks didn’t become serious until around this past holiday season. Once Mason decided it was time to sell, he said, a deal fell into place quickly.

Mason had been with Mason Distributing for 42 years. The company has distributed exclusively hobby-related products for the past 25 years, he said.

Hobbytyme was not interested in acquiring the production rights to Gofer Decals, a line of aftermarket 1:24- and 1:25-scale racing decals manufactured by Mason Distributing, Mason said. So he decided he will continue to produce the line on his own. It will be distributed through Hobbytyme, Mason said.

Hobby stores looking to become dealers of Hobbytyme products can now also call Mason’s Roanoke office at 800-777-3977, he said.
