On January 24, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) “soft launched” its new web-based Publicly Available Consumer Product Safety Information Database,

The database allows consumers, healthcare professional, government officials and others to submit reports of harm attributed to consumer products. Manufacturers, importers and private labelers that are identified in the reports will receive a copy and have the chance to comment. Both the reports and answering comments will be published online and accessible to anyone.

During the soft launch, reports and manufacturer comments that are gathered will not be made public, even after the website is officially opened. The soft launch is being used as a way to test the system and work out any bugs before the hard launch in March, 2011.

The CPSC hopes that businesses will register with the new site, which will allow the commission to send notices to manufacturers more efficiently. The online comment feature should allow a business respond promptly to what it believes to be false assertions or confidential information in a report before it is posted to the web.
