Thousands of dollars in drones were stolen Nov. 6 from the HobbyTown in Tyler, Texas. The robbery occurred in the early morning hours. Police responded to the store’s security alarm but did not find the culprit.

Surveillance video showed the thief covered from head to toe in a rain jacket, mask and gloves. He or she broke through the front door and proceeded to take the drones.

According to the store's owner, several drones were stolen from a HobbyTown store in the Dallas area the day before.

The National Model Railroad Association is sponsoring National Model Railroad Month, the November campaign focused on the advancement of the hobby through outreach and other methods of new member acquisition. This is a time when clubs and enthusiasts are asked to share and promote model railroading with people new to the hobby.

The NMRA wants members to look at their local community as a stage where they can show off their model trains and get others hooked on the hobby. The organization suggests that those with model train collections open their homes and allow people to view their layouts. Enthusiasts could also bring trains to their work and let co-workers get a closer look at them. Members are also encouraged to simply take photos of their collection and show them to others.

"The future of the hobby depends on the commitment of organizations like the NMRA, but equally important are the contributions of individuals," says Patrick Kalscheuer, managing member of Creative Zest, LLC, a train-centric company. "Each enthusiast has the potential for exposing people in their community to the many facets of model railroading. There is no better way to grow interest in others than by sharing one’s skills, talent and enthusiasm."

Throughout November, cities across the continent are hosting train-themed events. On Nov. 17, Toronto will have 70,000 square feet of train layouts on display. On Nov. 24, the Scarborough Model Railroaders Club is celebrating its 47th anniversary as a club this year and is hosting a Train Show open to the public. To read about other events click here.
