Can you pay $10 an hour?

Retailers question whether to pay new hires more than minimum wage—and speculate how it would change their business

Wal-Mart intends to pay a starting wage of $10 an hour beginning Feb. 1. In an article in CNNMoney earlier this year, Carol Schumacher, vice president of investor relations for Wal-Mart, stated, “Any time any company raises wages, it’s a help for the economy.” Can smaller retailers also afford to pay that much for a new employee? We asked several hobby-store owners to weigh in on the issue.
