HO Electro-Motive Division SD70ACe Diesel

Walthers showed pre-production samples of these HO-scale modern powerhouses at the National Train Show. When available in March, they’ll be offered painted for BNSF Ry., Canadian National, Florida East Coast, Union Pacific and UP heritage schemes (Chicago & North Western, Denver & Rio Grande Western and Southern Pacific). From the Walthers Mainline series, the engines have prototype-specific headlight location, working front ditch lights, drill-starter points for grab irons (sold separately) and Proto-Max couplers. Direct-current models will sell for $129.98; versions with dual-mode SoundTraxx Digital Command Control sound decoders, $199.98. Item numbers to be announced. 


HO Electro-Motive Division GP39-2 Diesel

Athearn Trains

This all-new HO-scale model is available with a direct-current drivetrain ($169.98) or equipped with a SoundTraxx Tsunami Digital Command Control sound decoder ($269.98). Available road names include Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe; Burlington Northern; Delaware & Hudson; Portland & Western; Reading Co.; and Willamette & Pacific, in four road numbers each. Each has a detailed cab interior, railroad-specific long hood and prototype-specific details. Part of Athearn’s top-line Genesis series, these locomotives (No. ATHG40792 to ATHG40799, ATHG40892 to ATHG40906 and ATHG40928 to ATHG40981) will be available in July.


HO Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone Steam Locomotive

MTH Electric Trains

This massive articulated steamer is available as a Class M3 version with Elesco feedwater heater and Class M4 with Worthington feedwater heater, in two road numbers per body style. It features die-cast metal construction with constant voltage light-emitting diode lighting, 28 Digital Command Control features and five-pole skew-wound motor. Models are available equipped with MTH’s Digital Command System/DCC-compatible Proto-Sound 3.0 sound or Proto-Sound 3E+ for Märklin 3-rail HO scale. Prices start at $599.95. They’ll be available in December.


N Electro-Motive Division SW1 Diesel

Hornby America

New to Hornby’s N-scale Arnold line is this first-generation diesel switcher featuring all-new tooling. Paint schemes available include Amtrak (black with arched and rectangular front cab windows, one road number each), Boston & Maine (black-and-red and McGinnis Blue schemes, one number each), Burlington Northern, Chicago & North Western (reporting marks and ball-and-bar herald on cab side, one number each), and Penn Central (small PC herald and large PC herald with “Penn Central” on hood, one number each). Each features a five-pole can motor with flywheels, six-pin NEM socket for a Digital Command Control decoder and a die-cast metal chassis. The locomotives (part numbers to be an-nounced) are priced at $129.99.


N Pennsylvania RR K4s 4-6-2 Pacific Steam Locomotive

Bachmann Trains

This hard-working steam engine comes in a pre-World War I version painted Brunswick Green (No. 52854), post-war version with modern pilot in two road numbers (Nos. 52851 and 52852) and pre-war version with slat pilot (No. 52854). They have die-cast metal chassis, prototype-specific details and Sound Value SoundTraxx DCC sound decoder. They retail for $399.


O General Electric Dash 8-40C and Dash 8-40CW Diesels

Atlas O

From Atlas O’s Trainman line comes this modern hauler, decorated for Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe; BNSF Ry. (Heritage III paint scheme); CSX (gray, blue and yellow) and Union Pacific, in two road numbers each. They’re available with two-rail DC drives (No. 20042001 to 20042008, $269.95), two-rail with QSI Titan DCC sound decoders (No. 20052001 to 20052008, $429.95), three-rail (No. 20022001 to 20022008, $269.95) and three-rail Lionel TrainMaster Command Control (No. 20032001 to 20032008, $429.95). All have directional light--emitting diode lighting, separately applied details and couplers. 


Z Electro-Motive Division E8A and E8B Diesels

American Z Line

These early diesel-era passenger locomotives are now available painted in the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe’s iconic red- and-silver “Warbonnet” scheme. Two A units (No. 62601-2 and 62601-4, $176) and two A-B sets (No. 62601-1S and 62601-3S, $297) are available. They have prototype-specific details, can motors with dual flywheels, and an extra front truck with coupler on the A unit. 


HO Alco S-2 Diesel

Atlas Model Train Co.

This four-axle transition-era diesel, part of Atlas’ Master Line, is available with new tooling and new paint schemes: Alaska RR, Canadian National, Central Vermont, Denver & Rio Grande Western, Grand Trunk Western, Lehigh Valley, Milwaukee Road, Seaboard Coast Line and Union Pacific. The models feature five-pole skew-wound motors with dual flywheels, directional light-emitting diode headlights and die-cast metal chassis. They’re available as DC models (No. 10001887 to 10001906, $154.95) or with dual-mode ESU LokSound sound decoders (No. 10001907 to 10001926, $264.95). 



HO and N TrinityRail 5660 PD Covered Hopper

BLMA Models

BLMA showed off a pre-production sample (shown above) of its new TrinityRail 5,660-cubic-foot-capacity Pressure Differential covered hopper. Road names available in second-quarter 2016 will be CIT Group, ConAgra Mills, North Dakota Mill and Trinity Industries Leasing, in six numbers per scheme. They will feature body-mounted couplers, separately applied wire uncoupling levers and 36" metal wheelsets. HO-scale models (No. 54001 to 54024) will sell for $49.95; N scale (No. 19001 to 19024) are priced at $29.95.


N 37-Foot Double-Sheathed Meat Refrigerator Car

Rapido Trains

Move perishable cargos to market in these colorful wood refrigerator cars. They’re available decorated for American Stores Co., Armour Refrigerator Line, Dubuque Packing Co., Dugdale Packing Co., General American Transportation Corp., Geo. A. Hormel & Co. (Union Refrigerator Transit Lines reporting marks), Hygrade Food Products Corp., Kingan Inc., Morris Rifkin & Son, Oscar Mayer, Swift Refrigerator Line (red or yellow with red block), The Tobin Packing Co. Inc., and Wilson Car Lines. The cars have detailed underbodies, blackened metal wheelsets and Magne-Matic couplers. Single cars sell for $34.95; a four-pack is $139.80.



HO Wills Modern Modular Building Kits


This new series of modular plastic structure kits have blind cuts inside the walls that allow the modeler to determine door, window, and loading door locations; brick finish on lower walls; and metal siding on upper walls. Initial kits planned for the line include the industrial/retail unit base (No. SSM300), an industrial/retail unit extension (No. SSM315), a supermarket facade (No. SSM310), a retail storefront (No. SSM311) and a warehouse dock with four doors (No. SSM312). Prices are to be announced; availability is expected for fall.

Woodland Scenics

This factory-assembled and painted injection-molded plastic structure is wired with warm white light-emitting diode interior light, compatible with Woodland Scenics’ Just Plug Lighting System. Part of the Built-&-Ready Landmark Structures line, it’s available in HO scale (No. BR5052, $99.99), N scale (No. BR4942, $64.99) and O scale (shown above, No. BR5852, $169.99).
